Permafrost, the highly anticipated story-driven survival sandbox from SpaceRocket Games and publisher Toplitz Productions, has entered Early Access on PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store as of October 9, 2026. Set in a near-future Earth locked in endless winter after a series of catastrophes that culminated in the shattering of the moon, the game places players in the role of Rook, an engineer skilled at rebuilding but lacking wilderness experience. Drawn into this frozen, unforgiving world by a radio signal from a long-lost friend named Icarus, long believed dead, players must fight for survival in a white hell of chaos and destruction. The cold stands as the true and ever-present enemy, with frostbite, dynamic weather, storms, and bitter sub-zero temperatures shaping every decision. Temperatures plunge even lower in dreaded cold zones that offer high risks alongside extraordinary loot for the brave. Players can face this post-apocalyptic wasteland alone or with a loyal dog companion rescued from the ruins, who scouts ahead, warns of danger, carries supplies, and provides grounding amid the silence. Alternatively, up to three friends can join in symbiotic co-operative multiplayer for a total of four survivors, dividing responsibilities, building shelter networks, and playing to each other's strengths without simplifying the world's brutality.

Exploration forms the core of progression in Permafrost, as players traverse a vast lore-rich open world where city ruins fade into wilderness. Progress is earned through adaptation: restoring abandoned shelters, repairing broken machines, and reclaiming fragile technology to push deeper into the frozen expanse. Resource gathering, scavenging, hunting for food and materials, and crafting a wide variety of tools, weapons, and protective clothing are essential, though scarce inventory space demands careful planning of expeditions. Building a network of shelters increases survival chances against fierce wildlife, rival factions vying for supremacy, and nature itself. The experience emphasizes grounded tension through silence and scarcity, avoiding constant gunfire or fantasy tropes in favor of winter isolation and resolve. On Steam, the Early Access version already implements most planned core features, including various biomes, hundreds of items, building blueprints, crafting recipes, the narrative's starting point with side quests, and fully functional co-op for up to four players. An extensive roadmap promises new content, with community feedback from the Discord server serving as a cornerstone for optimizations, quality-of-life improvements, and fresh ideas. Developers aim for at least twelve months in Early Access to expand with more biomes, quests, NPCs, enemies, equipment, and vehicles, while noting that the price will likely rise as content grows.

SpaceRocket Games was founded in 2023 after an informal prototype started in December 2022 with a dedicated trio; the team has since grown to fifteen designers, programmers, and artists mixing newcomers and veterans. Toplitz Productions, the German-Austrian publisher named after the mysterious Toplitz Lake and known for the Dynasty and Giant series, develops and publishes games with heart and soul. The Early Access phase lets players shape Permafrost directly through feedback on the official Discord server, which serves as the primary hub for suggestions, discussions, and developer interaction. Most planned core features are already in place, including the starting narrative, side quests, and multiplayer, giving survivors a solid foundation while the team expands the world further. The game emphasizes enduring the cold every single day through preparation, shelter networks, and careful timing, whether playing solo with the dog companion or coordinating strengths in co-op. Available now on PC, Permafrost offers a tense, grounded survival experience in a post-apocalyptic frozen wasteland where isolation and resolve matter most.
