News: Foolish Mortals Launches Today on Steam and GOG
Inklingwood Studios released Foolish Mortals, a full-length, fully voiced, hand-drawn point-and-click adventure game inspired by classics like Monkey Island and Broken Sword. Set in 1930s Louisiana on the enigmatic island of Devil's Rock, players embody young treasure hunter Murphy McCallan, voiced by acclaimed actor AJ LoCascio, known for roles such as Marty McFly in Back to the Future: The Game, Han Solo in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and Gambit in X-Men '97. The story unfolds in 1933, thirty-three years after a mysterious wedding vanished, taking with it the location of the lost treasure of Bellemore Manor. As Murphy delves into this merry yet macabre mystery, he uncovers clues about the haunted estate, awakening spirits who are content in their afterlife—except for an evil phantom racing to claim the treasure. To solve the enigma, players must piece together the past, potentially requiring Murphy to 'die' in the narrative sense. This cozy tale blends spooky elements without true scares, offering a narrative-driven experience where every puzzle advances the heartfelt story of loss, love, and redemption.
Foolish Mortals emphasizes accessibility and charm in its design, featuring dynamic hints and an expanding puzzle structure suitable for newcomers and veterans alike. Players interact with over 100 classic-style items across more than 75 hand-drawn, full HD locations, plus dozens of paintings, documents, and details to investigate. The game delivers a substantial adventure, with gameplay length comparable to Monkey Island and Broken Sword. High-quality animation from a professional studio enhances the immersive 1930s atmosphere, accompanied by over two hours of original music, including an interactive big band song. Fully voiced with more than 35 characters, the dialogue brings the world to life, highlighted by LoCascio's charismatic performance as Murphy. A complete German translation by point-and-click veteran Marcel Weyers, who worked on Return to Monkey Island and others, ensures broader accessibility. Designed by a former theme park designer and author of Theme Park Design & The Art of Themed Entertainment, the game captures a whimsical yet eerie vibe, free of deaths, dead-ends, or jumpscares—truly spooky but not scary.
Available now on Steam and GOG, Foolish Mortals marks Inklingwood Studios' debut. A physical Big Box Edition evokes 90s nostalgia, packed with 15 goodies for fans. This launch celebrates a passion project blending adventure gaming heritage with modern polish, inviting players to explore Devil's Rock's secrets in a cozy, puzzle-filled journey that honors its inspirations while carving a fresh ghostly tale.
