Castlevania turns 40 on September 26, 2026, and Konami is marking the date with a limited-time free mobile release of the original 1986 game plus a short anniversary film that fans immediately paused on. The first Castlevania, the Famicom Disk System and NES hunt that sent Simon Belmont into Dracula’s castle, is available as a free app on iOS and Android for a set window so players can replay the opening story without buying it again. The same campaign adds timed discounts on existing compilations, including steep cuts on the Anniversary Collection, Dominus Collection, and Advance Collection through early October on storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop. Commemorative videos, subscription drops for classic soundtracks, vinyl editions of the first game and Symphony of the Night, and a 2027 orchestral concert series in Tokyo, London, and Los Angeles round out the official slate. Konami also pointed ahead to Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, the next mainline entry from Evil Empire, set for October 15 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.

The clip that spread fastest is only a few seconds long. Around the 1:21 mark, Simon walks past four framed paintings. The first uses key art from the forthcoming Belmont’s Curse. The next three show Castlevania: Curse of Darkness from 2005, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence from 2003, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow from 2010. Those three are the major 3D-era games that have not been bundled into Konami’s recent 2D collections. Viewers read the wall as a release-order hint: finish Belmont’s Curse, then expect the PlayStation 2 and later 3D titles in a new pack. The Nintendo 64 pair, Castlevania 64 and Legacy of Darkness, barely appears in the video, which is why some fans treat the tease as incomplete even if a collection is real. Konami has not confirmed a 3D compilation in the anniversary text. The paintings are the only new visual cue, sitting inside an otherwise celebratory recap of Belmonts climbing the same castle across four decades.

What is confirmed does not depend on that theory. The original game is free on phones for a limited time. Older collections are on sale. Music and concert plans are dated. Belmont’s Curse still launches in mid-October as the first new numbered-style entry in more than a decade. A 3D collection would fill an obvious gap after the 2D anthologies, but until a listing or trailer says so, it remains a reading of four portraits. For the anniversary weekend the practical news is simpler. Anyone with a phone can download the 1986 Castlevania at no cost while it lasts, pick up discounted compilations if those are missing from a library, and watch the studio put Simon, the other heroes, and Dracula’s hallway of unfinished business on screen at the same time. Forty years after the first whip crack, the series is both looking backward with a free classic and forward with a dated new game—and, if the paintings mean what fans think, a path back to the 3D castles that never joined the last round of reissues.
