News: 2D Action Souls-like Gurei Arrives on Steam in July
Astrolabe Games has announced that Gurei, the highly-challenging action game developed by Lobo Sagaz Studio, will release on Steam on July 23, 2026. Inspired by classic Japanese samurai cinema (chambara), Gurei places players in the role of Rei, a human spirit tasked with defeating powerful mystical entities of nature known as the Kami. These beings are drawn from Japanese mythology, and defeating them allows Rei to absorb their powers. The game features a striking hand-drawn art style with fluid animations and a surreal world that blends human and spirit realms in a gray, metaphorical landscape. A public demo is already available on Steam, offering players a chance to experience the unforgiving gameplay ahead of launch. Console releases are planned for a later date.
Gurei emphasizes player choice and adaptability through its dynamic difficulty system. Bosses can be tackled in any order, with each Kami’s strength adjusting based on the player’s chosen path—meaning the same enemy fought early could become a final boss in another route. Combat is precise and demanding, requiring timing, patience, and mastery. Beyond basic sword attacks, dodges, and head stomps, Rei gains a unique new skill after each victory, such as enhanced dashes, execution weapons, healing abilities, and more. This creates deep strategic layers, as distinct enemy patterns and acquired powers allow multiple approaches to challenges. Players can revisit fights and experiment with different strategies, making player agency the core power in this unforgiving experience.
Beyond intense battles, Gurei offers a rich narrative and world-building layer. The Kami inhabit a surreal castle between realms, and victories bring Rei closer to the spirit world, introducing peculiar mythological characters that provide commentary, animations, side objectives, and hidden secrets. Defeated Kami are absorbed not just for power but also personality—they accompany Rei and offer dialogue that ranges from lore insights and mechanical tips to unhelpful or humorous remarks. Developed by the small Brazilian indie team Lobo Sagaz Studio, known for creating unique worlds with strong artistic expression, and published by Astrolabe Games, Gurei promises a memorable journey of precision combat, exploration, and discovery in its hand-crafted universe. The Steam page highlights full controller support and multiple language options including English, Japanese, and Portuguese-Brazil.
